Special Education

At Faxon Academy, we believe all kids can succeed! As part of our commitment to help all students reach their potential, we offer a top-notch special education program in all grades to identify, diagnose, and serve those students with special educational needs.

Full Inclusion

Global Psychological Services (GPS) ensures that students with disabilities develop mentally, physically, emotionally, and vocationally through the provision of an appropriate, individualized education in the least restrictive environment. GPS provides special education and related services according to the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and the Michigan Administrative Rules for Special Education

We will offer a full inclusion program to serve students with special needs, ensuring all of our students become part of the school community. In order to ensure we address student needs in a timely fashion, we employ the following strategies:

  • GPS screens incoming students for existing IEPTs.
  • Our teachers are trained to carefully monitor individual student performance for exceptional needs.
  • Weekly staff meetings and monthly progress reports allow teachers, administrators, and parents to evaluate the academic and social progress of each student.

Professionally-Equipped Teachers

We believe that teachers must have strategies for working with exceptional students and remain equipped with the proper tools. Thus, GPS will provide ongoing training for all teachers in this area through the resource room teacher in the school and/or outside resources such as workshops, seminars, and access to professional development resources like online assistive technology trainings to support continuing professional development. All of our teachers and administration receive training in the following:

  • Individualized and differentiated instruction
  • Brain-based learning
  • Identification, screening, implementation, and maintenance of Individual Education Program (IEP) and Section 504 plan

The resource room teacher will be available to co-teach in classrooms and provide an even smaller student/teacher ratio. This teacher will provide special education consultative services and will assist teachers in developing students’ strengths while using these strengths to address areas of weakness. The resource room teacher will also assist regular teachers in making necessary modifications and adjusting the presentation of curriculum as needed so that all students can be successful. We will regularly evaluate all special education services to determine effectiveness on each student’s achievement.
